Class Descriptions
Parent and Child Aquatics
6 Months to 3 years of age
Class size 8 |
Provides experiences and activities for children to -
1. Establish expectation for adult supervision. 2. Learn how to enter and exit the water in a safe manner. 3. Explore submerging
to the mouth, nose, eyes and completely. 4. Explore buoyancy on the front and back position. 5. Glide on the front and back with
assistance. 6. Change body position in the water. 7. Perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance. 8. Learn how to
play safely. 9. Experience wearing a U.S. Coast Guard - approved life jacket. |
Preschool Aquatics
3 to 5 years of age
Class size 6 |
Orients children to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills.
1. Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. 2. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. 3. Open eyes and under water and
retrieve submerged objects. 4. Front & back glides and floats. 5. Roll from front to back and back to front. 6. Alternating arm and
leg actions on front and back. 7. Combined arm and leg actions on front and back. |
Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills
None - Participants start at about 6
years of age.
Class size 8 |
Helps participants feel comfortable in the water and gain basic swimming and propulsive skills.
1. Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. 2. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. 3. Open eyes and under water and
retrieve submerged objects. 4. Front & back glides and floats. 5. Recover to vertical position. 6. Roll from front to back and back
to front. 7. Tread water using arm and hand actions. 8. Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back. 9. Alternating
and simultaneous arm actions on front and back. 10. Combined arm and leg actions on front and back. |
Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Must have passed Level 1
Class size 8 |
Gives participants success with fundamental skills.
1. Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. 2. Fully submerge and hold breath. 3. Open eyes and under water and retrieve
submerged objects. 4. Front, jelly fish and tuck floats. 5. Front and back glides and floats. 6. Roll from front to back and back to
front. 7. Tread water using arm and hand actions. 8. Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back. 9. Combined
arm and leg actions on front and back. 10. Finning arm action. |
Level 3 - Stroke Development
Must have passed Level 2
Class size 8 |
Builds on skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice in deeper water.
1. Enter water by jumping from the side. 2. Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions. 3. Bobbing while
moving toward safety. 4. Rotary breathing. 5. Survival float. 6. Back float. 7. Change from vertical to horizontal position on front
and back. 8. Tread water. 9. Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front. 10. Front crawl and Elementary back
crawl. |
Level 4 - Stroke Improvement
Must have passed Level 3
Class size 8 |
Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatics skills.
1. Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions. 2. Swim under water. 3. Feet first surface dive. 4. Survival
swimming. 5. Front crawl and back stroke open turns. 6. Tread water using two different kicks. 7. Front and back crawl, elementary
backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. 8. Flutter and dolphin kicks on back. |
Level 5 - Stroke Refinement
Must have passed Level 4
Class size 8 |
Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.
1. Shallow – angle dive from the side then glide and begin front stroke. 2. Tuck and pike surface dives, submerge completely.
3. Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming. 4. Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke
and butterfly. 5. Sculling. |
Level 6 - Personal Water Safety / Fitness Swimmer
Must have passed Level 5
Class size 20 |
1. Stroke refinement to increase ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over a greater distance while swimming front crawl, back
crawl, butterfly, elementary back stroke, breaststroke and side stroke. 2. Open turns, flip turns, sidestroke turn & butterfly turn.
3. Explain techniques that can be used to avoid aquatic emergencies, stay safe while boating or operating personal water craft.
4. Survival swimming, HELP and huddle positions. 5. Recognizing characteristic behaviors of someone who needs help in the
water. 6. Reaching , throwing and wading assists. 7. Survival float.. |
Junior Guard
Must have passed Level 6
Class size 10

1. Provide a foundation of aquatic & leadership knowledge, attitudes & skills for future successful completion of the Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. 2. Learn about the causes & ways to prevent drowning & diving accidents. 3. Learn how to recognize some-one in trouble. 4. Learn how to supervise others around the water.

REGISTRATION DATES:
April 24th - Online registration begins for Hesperia
residents (residency will be verified electronically).
May 8th - Online nonresident registration (nonresident fee add $2.00 per person per session). Non-Resident registration 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
(residents welcome).
Walk-in registration will be taken by appointment
only. All appointments must be made between Tuesday, May 1st. through Monday, May 7th. at Lime Street Park Community Center, Program Office.
The following is the only proof of residency
which will be accepted:
Valid California Driver’s License, Current Utility
Bill or Property Tax Bill.
Classes will be closed for registration on the
Monday (at 6:00 p.m.) preceding the first day of
class for each session.
LATE REGISTRATION: Lime Street Park Community
Center on Tuesdays by appointment only.
Appointments must be made by the preceding
Monday, no later than 12:00 p.m. Late Registration
will be taken the week following non-resident
registration.
COST PER PARTICIPANT: $30.00 per two week
session, Monday through Friday. Session 1 and 3 will
be short one day due to legal holiday, class fees
will be $27.00. $24.00 per four day Saturday session. $40.00 per Junior Guard participant. Non-resident fee is $2.00 per
session, per person.
OTHER INFORMATION: Classes may be canceled
at the Park District’s discretion. Classes
with less than four registered participants may be
canceled. Participants do not advance to the next
level unless able to complete the skills in present
level. The intent of the program is to make
participants water safe. It is the responsibility of
the parent/guardian to register their child for

| OPEN SWIM Lime Street Pool |
Lime Street Pool will be open daily beginning May 26th for public swimming and will close for the season on September 3rd. Lime Street Pool is staffed with certified lifeguards.
HOURS:
Monday through Friday: 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., 1:50 to 3:20 p.m. & 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Saturdays: 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m., 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. & 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
Late night swim 8:00 to 9:30 p.m.(1st and 3rd Saturday of every month)
Sundays: 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. & 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Holidays: 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. & 2:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Cost: $2.00 per person, per session.
Pool Rules:
Children under 48” tall must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
No horseplay, no glass, no toys, no electrical devices. Food and drink only in designated area.
District Code of Conduct and other rules will apply.
Swimsuits are required for entry into the gated pool area - Strictly Enforced
Males 6 years and over: must have shorts with a drawstring and liner.
Females 6 years and over: must wear a swimsuit or shorts (must meet the same requirements as males) with a sports bra (may not be white or see-through).
Children 5 years and younger: must wear a swimsuit with a liner (drawstring is not required, must have an elastic waist). Swim diapers are allowed.
Any swim attire that is offensive to the general public will not be allowed. |

Hesperia Recreation and Park District will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Candidates must be 15 years of age or older. The top 12 candidates will be selected upon an in-water assessment of swimming skills at Lime Street Pool Saturday, March 17th, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. The course dates will be as follows: |

Registration will begin on Tuesday, February 7, 2012 and is being accepted at Lime Street Park Community Center, 16292 Lime Street, Hesperia on a first come basis from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All participants must be registered for the class by Friday, March 16th at 4:00 p.m. All Candidates that are hired by the District and work the entire
2012 aquatics season will be reimbursed $50.00 of the registration fees. Participants under 18 years of age must have a parent sign a participation waiver prior to the in-water assessment.

The pool is available for rent most Saturdays from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. beginning June 2nd through August 26th. Registration is required two weeks in advance and can be made at Lime Street Park Community Center. |

| WATER AEROBICS |
Tired of being hot and sweaty during your workout? You don’t have to be any longer! Hesperia Recreation and Park District is proud to offer Water Aerobics during our aquatic schedule again this season. You can tone muscles, burn fat and finish your workout feeling fresh and energized with water exercise. Let the water’s natural resistance provide a workout that is beneficial while minimizing stress on the joints. Do something good for your body and have fun while doing it! Participants work at their own pace in a heated pool, swim skills not required. Water Aerobics is designed to increase physical activity and improve cardiovascular fitness. This class will also stress the importance of proper breathing and mobility, as well as, trimming and toning. Class size is limited and subject to cancellation due to lack of enrollment. Classes are from May 29th through August 2nd. Classes are held on Tuesday through Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. Classes will not be held on holidays.
